I have continued to brave the wilds of secondary teaching, attempted to turn evocative and profound pieces of student work into data points to feed the remorseless and ever hungering <b><i>Data Gods.</i></b> I have consistently received insightful, high quality feedback from by placement school, reflected <i>(boy, have I ever reflected…) </i>and improved my practice.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;">I have continually refined my practice over the last year, from which I now feel more comfortable in the act of teaching, I have developed productive relationships with some of the hardiest students, and am now, with growing consistency, delivering engaging, high quality lessons which stretch and challenge the high flyers in my classes, yet have a built in provision for supporting those students who struggle, allowing all student the opportunity to succeed and progress.</span></div>

How can we support our pupils in the classroom? </b><br />

On Tuesday, March 8th, Upper Shirley High was pleased to welcome the current cohort of primary and secondary Wildern Partnership SCITT trainees to our school. We work closely with the Wildern Partnership SCITT as we have a strong shared commitment to initial teacher training and preparing our future teachers to be effective and empathetic professionals. <br />
<br />
Joanna Wojcik, our EAL co-ordinator, welcomed our primary and secondary colleagues with a Polish lesson. She spoke exclusively in Polish thus demonstrating how daunting it must be for some EAL students to cope in an English speaking classroom. She then introduced a range of useful and practical strategies which she has drawn together from her wealth of teaching experience. The session closed with some reflective group work based on case studies and how all those present could implement what they had learnt.<br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Let's rewind the clock, way back to September of 2015, back to when I started my first placement as a trainee secondary school teacher of Art. A career choice I had not entered into lightly, deciding to enter into the profession at the ripe old age of 31,</span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> bringing with me a wealth of both life and academic experience, coupled with an unbridled passion for all things ‘Art.’</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Introductions and heroic back-story aside, let's come back to September 2015, when I first stepped foot in a classroom with a name tag that rather prematurly read ‘Art Teacher.’ I had been selected to work in this particular school by my training provider, the amenable Wildern Partnership SCITT, since it was suited to both the needs of me as a trainee, and the needs of them as a host school. Having been introduced to my department, a process which takes far less time than one of the ‘core’ subjects due to its streamlined size, I was asked to spend my first week observing the various members of the team teach, taking notes and absorbing the many details which go in to teaching.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The week after that my mentor recommended I start to take sections of the lesson, be it the starter or the closing of the lesson wrap up. A few days after that I was attempting to lead complete lessons, which, with the benefit of reflection were not my finest work.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This however, was my very first fledgling step into teaching. In the months that followed I participated in general professional and subject studies at the SCITT's training centre and partnership schools, to train me, in a more rounded sense, while leading classes and then receiving detailed, constructive feedback from my department on the lessons I was taking with increasing frequency. This process has taken me from merely surviving lessons to being graded ‘Good,’ in many lessons at the time I write this. (For those un-initiated in the various codes and vocabulary of the profession, ‘Good’ is teacher talk for above average, with only ‘Outstanding’ being a higher grade, which after 5 months I am pretty pleased with!)</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I have reflected on my practice, improved, been inspired and progressed as a practioner. To say it has all been sunshine and lollypops would be disingenuous and I would be selling the experience short. I have had some truly epic ‘ups’ during my training, like seeing a student's face when that light bulb goes off and they really grasp a concept or a theme. Or the time I have spent with some of the more challenging students - those removed from the main-stream classroom, having one of these students come into class with a burning passion to create because I have managed to hook him with the theme of the lesson or stretched the outcome to make it relatable to him is truly priceless.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The ‘downs’ have been just as world shaking, despite an abundance of information before signing up I was not prepared for the hectic workload and pressure, whatever you have heard or assume. It is more. I have crashed emotionally some nights after a particularly brutal session in school, but thanks to the support of the SCITT, my school and the relationships I have fostered with my fellow trainees I have always picked myself up, dusted myself down and started again the next day.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This brings me to now, its February 2016, I have just under took a week of Enriched Learning Experience with my fellow trainees, which shows us both primary and further education in order to be a more effective teacher, seeing what enviroment the students come from and what they will need when they leave my care. I am on the eve of starting my second placement at my ‘contrasting school’ to bring even more breadth to my training and I’m excited. Usually exhausted, but excited neverth ess, to continue this journey, the kids are worth it.</span></div>

of our training year, my fellow English trainees and I had the pleasure of
observing a KS3 lesson on grammar. As the children bundled into the classroom
they were each given a placard, thus becoming a different part of speech: verb,
noun, adjective, preposition, etc. The aim of the game was for them to organise
themselves into sentences, but when we arrived on the scene our eyes were met
with quite a different spectacle: there was a noun on the floor being
administered first aid by a helpful adjective; a group of personal pronouns
talking about themselves; a pair of conjunctions holding hands in the corner; an
interjection looking shocked; a gang of adverbs relentlessly, mercilessly and
gleefully chasing a verb around the room – and there were prepositions all over
the shop: on the tables, under the tables, in the cupboard, behind the door… It
was absolute carnage, but at least it was grammatically correct carnage.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are two reasons why I will never forget this
lesson. One, it made grammar stimulating and engaging and would surely have
been graded ‘outstanding’. Two, it was a perfect example of a day in the life
of a teacher. Yes, it was chaotic. Yes, it was unpredictable. Yes, it was
exhausting. But by Gove – sorry, by Jove – the teacher knew exactly what kind
of journey she wanted to take her pupils on and she made sure that they all
reached their destination. In that sense, this lesson also represents a year in
the life of a trainee. The past 12 months have also been a journey. It has been
chaotic, it has been unpredictable, it has been exhausting – but we’ve made it.
Together. I’d like to thank everyone who helped us along the way. I’d also like
to propose a grammatically correct roadmap for future trainees on how to make
it – and avoid the carnage:<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I once read that the Aymara, an indigenous
population from the Andes, have a different take on time: they are the only
culture in the world to gesture in front of themselves and not back over their
shoulders when talking about the past. This is because the Aymara don’t face
the flow of time, they turn their backs on it; in their eyes the past is what
they can see and the future is what they can’t see. It is a profound logic. Almost
universally across all cultures time is compared to a river; it’s just that in
the 21<sup>st</sup> century we find ourselves constantly fighting against the impetus
of the waters, like salmon struggling upstream to reproduce. And do you know
what happens to most species of salmon when they reach their spawning ground?
They die. So long, and thanks for all the fish. Quite sensibly, the Aymara skip
the salmon run and allow the future to carry them out to sea; they just go with
the flow. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Nowhere in the world does time move more like a
river than in school. Sometimes it’s a dribble, sometimes it’s a trickle, but
most of the time it’s the gushing torrent of a river in spate, made even more
treacherous by the flotsam and jetsam of exams and data. But the river of time
in school isn’t any old river: it is a river full of leaping salmon. It is the
River Tyne of rivers (apparently the best for salmon fishing in the UK). Like
the salmon we – students and teachers alike – are <i>anadromous</i>, from the Greek for ‘running upward’. We push on, ever
upwards, in the name of progress. (Forget the school run, it’s all about the
salmon run.) But I think that sometimes we forget how far we’ve come and how
quickly – all upriver. We forget to pause in a plunge pool below the next
waterfall of assessments and enjoy the view. We forget to turn our backs on our
future goals and admire our past achievements. Try it sometime: think like a
South American salmon and bask in the shallows where time moves more slowly. Think
like an Aymara and enjoy the view</span></span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">. </span><br />
